Stamford Zoning officials OK St. John’s Towers demolition but require ‘relocation plan’ for tenants

STAMFORD – Preliminary approvals have been granted for a new affordable housing building in downtown Stamford to replace the remaining St. John’s Towers buildings on Tresser Boulevard.

The Zoning Board approved the “general development plan” for the 305-unit apartment building Monday. The final proposal, which will include the specifics for a public-amenity space, architectural designs and parking layout, are due for final site plan review and approvals later in the year.

The two old towers, built as affordable housing residences some 50 years ago, are to be replaced with a residential structure that will also be designated as affordable housing. A third tower was previously torn down in 2018.

“It’s a great project,” commented Zoning Board chairman David Stein after the unanimous vote.

“The site plan will come back to us and the public will be able to comment on the building design, etc., as we will,” said Zoning Board member Rosanne McManus.
