Demolition before construction

WILMINGTON OH — Demolition of the old Textron factory site — along South Nelson Avenue across from the city’s landfill — began in October. The work signals a beginning of the huge project involving upgrading/updating the city’s wastewater treatment plant through the new Ohio BUILDS water infrastructure grant program.
The demolition subcontractor is Charles Jergens Construction of Dayton.
All the steel from the building was recycled, as were many other components, according to City of Wilmington Public Works Director Rick Schaffer.
“The next step is crushing the concrete foundation into stone-sized pieces, starting next week,” said Schaffer. “All the concrete will be recycled and stockpiled for use on various city projects. The crushing process will take about six weeks.
“Previous Wilmington administrations had the foresight about 10 years ago to acquire the former Textron facility on Nelson Avenue,” added Schaffer. “Being directly across the street from the current plant, it is the perfect site for a new wastewater plant.
Construction of the new plant is expected to begin next year, and is expected to be completed by 2024.
