Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) – “It’s an exciting day,” said Brendan Mehaffy, Executive Director of Strategic Planning in Buffalo. “This is one of the largest projects from a residential perspective in the region.”

Mayor Byron Brown and the Buffalo Municipal Housing authority have signed off on funding for the redevelopment of the Commodore Perry Projects.
It means demolition of 24 vacant apartment buildings can begin.
The largely boarded up complex in the Old First Ward is comprised of 19 acres
just south of the I-190. The project would transform the aging housing complex, built in the 1950’s
into a new vibrant community with affordable and market rate housing.
“This represents a $260 million investment of state, federal and city funding. The demolition alone is expected to be $6-$7 million,” added Mehaffy. When complete, the new Perry neighborhood will feature 405 residential units in 27 buildings, including townhouses and multi family buildings. Mehaffy said it’s going to be a huge transformation in the area.

The city expects demolition to start in the second quarter of this year.
