Thanks Demobud and James.
That is exactly what I was looking for. Just blew a full morning exploring the paths and relavant searches that your Crowder Supply link led me to. Next step will be to walk into an industrial rental place and see what they've got.
I actually did finish the job in March by pounding in 3 partial rods that add up to more then 8'. Then put it up on my web site - lots of pics and gab. It has had so many hits that I thought I would try to find out how I should have done it and then add links to the correct information and equipment. Now I'm closer, thanks to you. Even Amazon has a $2,348.57 Jet Equipment Rock Drill, but no 8' extensions that I can find. Finding specific DIY "How it works" info is difficult also, which is what I try to offer on my site.
Again, thanks.
How big of a hole are you needing? You should be able to rent a rockdrill with extensions up to 12' from most heavy industrial rental places.
If you are using an electric hammer/drill I am not sure there are extensions that long that can take the pounding. All of the rock drills I have used for drilling holes that deep are pneumatic.

Need to hammer-drill-pray an 8' hole through sandstone-like bedrock in the CA hi-desert. Then drop in a grounding rod and back-fill with conductive sediment & water. Is there an 8' bit or extension? I want to find the bit or whatever first and then get the jack hammer it fits. Another novice question: are standard bits interchangeble or does each manufacturer require its own? Leaning towards Makita but open to all suggestions. Thanks.
