That would last a lot longer, but the problem is weight and repairability. You want something at the load point of the bed that will give if hit by the loader/excavator bucket, but that doesn't add too much weight tot he truck reducing the carrying capacity. No matter how good your operator is, he's going to hit a truck bed at some point. I know I have hit my share in the last twenty years (sometimes to wake the driver up!).
