Rich,
Cat should be able to offer a "kit", not piece parts, at a more reasonable price. The FOG should simply bolt-on to existing mounts. Is your Cat salesman new?
Jewell probably offers a frame-mounted FOG, built in to the mainframe of the machine, not simply bolted to the cab itself. Definitely looks beefier and probably is, but OEM FOG guards are built and tested to an ISO/SAE standard. I don't know if Jewell or other aftermarket guys test to a standard for a given model, like an OEM does. If there's an accident and the FOG fails, who's responsible?
Don't know of any sources for bolt-on guards, but a couple others that do frame-mounted guards are: Bateman Mfg out of TX/Canada, WA Attachments out of Seattle area is a little house but proactive.
But something sounds wrong from Cat, suggest you ask again or shop around other dealers.
Anyone know where to get a fair priced F.O.G out there? I am wanting to go with my Cat salesman with the factory Cat guard, but after quoting me $2,900 + tax I got this email this morning:
Rich,
I advised the sales dept to order this yesterday and we were informed by the factory, that this kit is not available through the factory. This kit and price are only if ordered with a factory ordered machine and installed at the factory. We were informed that it now can be ordered through the parts dept, by itself. I checked with Parts and found the breakdown and pricinig on it, which I have attached. It comes unassembled and is ordered as individual parts. I had John print the breakdown and quote, which I have attached. Let me know if you still want me to order it for you, through parts. The total price is $3,998.06 + tax ($4,347.89 total), which is higher than the original kit quoted. The good news is we can have it in a couple days. Sorry for the confusion. Let me know what you decide.
Thanks-
I called Jewell Equipment and checked on their guards which they say are beefier than the Cat FOG.. The price for their guard was $8,000 + !!
Perhaps it is money well spent. I don't want to sound cheap when it comes to safety. I know these guards are important. Our 320cl has one and it has come in handy in the past..
Thanks for any directions to some potential suppliers or other vendors.
Rich
