Heres a neat little tool I found to strip all the small guage stuff you find in BX. It may not seem worth the time, but the price you can get for clean as opposed to dirty is usually a large margin.

YouTube - Powered Automatic Salvage Copper Scrap Wire Stripper

The time/money killer is the stripping part. That is why alot of guys will just can the BX and salvage it for dirty price. This makes it go much faster than stipping by hand.

Could be something worth buying, the unit costs about $400.00. Given enough copper scrap, the unit could pay for itself quickly. May even be something a laborer could do when there is a lull in the action at the jobsite or shop time busy work.

Im glad you guys know that. I work for an electrical distributor in the bay area. I buy electrical equipment like transformers, panel boards, circuit breakers, and motor control. Most jobs I go to and talk to the demo crew they tell me that they trash the electrical!! I was shocked to hear that. We are considering starting up a small demo company so we can get a better handle on the used electrical equipment out there. Any thoughts? Any demo companies that come across this and trash it? if so, why? What would motivate you to keep it?

Hi Idi
I used to work in the elevator business in the Bay Area and I used to work with ICONCO Inc. (now LVI) and I still closely follow demo activity top see if there's anything of salvage value in the way of elevators or electrical equipment.
On this note, the Cathedral Hill Hotel on Van Ness in S.F. will be coming down sometime in 2010 and I will be doing a survey of the elevator controllers in that building.

Welcome to Elevator World.com

Determining the value of elevator (and other electrical) equipment is a lot like putting a value on TVs -if it's a flat screen or a late model CRT type, it has good value. However if its a pre 90s vintage model, it's probably not worth much.

If the equipment has value, the next question is whether you can actually get it out of the building. Installing an elevator is like building a ship in a bottle -everything is put in piece by piece and once it's in the building, it's practically impossible to remove. Another "Catch 22" is that most of the equipment is on the roof and once it's removed, you cannot use the elevators to bring it down!

Therefore, only those items that can be removed are just the control cabinets in the penthouse and the door operators. From my experience, the only equipment that can be salvaged is what can be carried down the stairs on an appliance dolly. Everything else is just left to crumble when the building comes down and ultimately scrapped.

On your topic of finding electrical equipment, you might want to drop me a private message.

Good luck -

EC

bump up lurkI believe that we are not real social workers. We may be doing social work in the eyes of the people, but we are really contemplatives in the heart of the world. For we are touching the body of Christ twenty-four hours…And I think that in our family we don’t need bombs and guns, to destroy, to bring peace, just get together, love one another, bring that peace, that joy, that strength of presence of each other in the home. And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.Thsale is a professional, loyal and reliable wow gold supplier online, we pioneered selling cheap wow gold. There are a couple of companies that will come in and remove the main electrical panels and the like, but most of the time some of the stuff is out dated.

But the other thing is, isn't it harder to get stuff re-certified to use in another project?

Most companies will either trash it or recycle it. One of the reasons that we don't keep the stuff is that we don't have the yards or reasons to keep it store in the hopes of reselling it and then after a little while you end of trashing it anyway.
