Hey guys thanks for all the help. We are going to just cut them out into 2 foot sections and place them into two 30 yard newell recycling containers. Its really not a big job just different then are normal tear down job.

I agree with demobud on this one. I was going to state pretty much the same thing.

The ones I have removed have been complete ones, laying them down and then cutting them up.

I would begin by removing all of the access panels so that you can reach the step/belt. there should be a main connecting link much like a master link on a timing belt. Remove the master link and you should be able to pull the step/belt out using a bobcat or a chain pull setup. Once you have the sep removed, the majority of the remains will be structural framework that you can either torch cut or cold cut depending on the surrounding environment. I f torches are used take care to not ignite the lubrication materials that will be present (grease, nylon pads etc.)
As far as cost, I wouldn't want to quote anything without either seeing it up close or at least seeing pictures of the escalator and the surrounding environment.

As I thought, my very wise friend Mike (aka Truckie) has the answer to your question about escalators. Here it is. By the way, where are the escalators located? He may be able to help with the shredding.

Here is Mike's response:

I will try to answer this question the best I can.
For the most part most of the escalator can and will be shredded. The heavier frame sections can be cut and placed in p&s. Prepared structural steel. The motors will be taken out and striped. As far as the part you stand on and all the sheet metal it can and will go in the shredder.

Now as far as removal of the escalator I would either disconnect the top and drop it, or the worst case would be take it apart in to pieces you can handle.

The belt or the step section you stand on should come apart fairly easy.
Hope this helps.

I know someone who can give you the answer about shredding old escalators, and I will forward the question to him.

By the way, where are they located? Might be interested for his scrap yard.

Well we wanted to take it out in whole, but the floor can only support the weight of a scissors lift. So the only way I can see is cutting it out piece by piece. There are 2 Escalators and I would guess that they weight 10 tons or more each. I'd say 90% of it will go to the scrap yard. Have you ever delt with or have any knowledge you can shed on this?

LOL! Fun Fun Fun

First question would be, do you want to or can you pull it out complete or do you want/have to remove it piece by piece?
