The tail cannot be allowed to wag the dog!!! Most employees will comply to wearing the proper PPE's when explained in a manner they understand. Perhaps a financial insentive each week of working safe. Any employee can be replaced. But utilimately no employees production is worth injury to them or a fellow worker. We have fired employees for not following safety policy after repeated warning. Word travels fast throughout the ranks and we have not had a problem since

Okay D.E. but what do you do when the most flagrant violators are also your most productive employees?

Bruce,
We have also worked very hard to keep our mod down. We have a zero tolerance for anyone working without the proper PPE's. It is a daily (sometimes hourly) battle with our workers. I have in the past had to terminate employees for continuos disregard for their own safety. However, I can't stress how important it is to have an insurance agent who knows the industry, knows you and your company practices . We have developed a personal relationship with our agent who will take the time to develop policies that will not only be inexpensive, but ensure proper coverage. He is young and agressive. You can also save by making sure your employees are in the proper classification ie; a truck driver or operator should be classified differently than a laborer. It may take a little time at the paperwork end, but the savings can be tremendous. We currently have a mod of .86. We are located in Massachusetts. Good Luck

Bruce,

Here is a great resource on the subject:

http://www.thezenith.com/zenit...../index.jsp

They have lots of information and tons of forms specifically for whatever state you are in. I highly recommended it for all to look at.

What is the best way to lower your Experience Modification Factor (EMF)? It seems every year our EMF goes a little bit higher, we have safety training every year, weekly safety meetings, but yet it seems like it keeps going up.

We try as much as possible to keep people who are injured on the payroll to avoid time lost injuries.

I would love to hear any suggestions you guys may have.
