Well I paid $4.49 yesterday for on-road and was mad, but $5.15 per gallon puts that into perspective.
How many folks have changed their Memorial Day plans due to gas prices?
Me and the wife were going to Orange Beach down on the gulf for the weekend (about a 4.5 hour drive one way) but decided to stay home more to protest the $.30/gallon increase in a week on fuel right before a national holiday. I know that our little protest won't effect anything but maybe more folks across the country will do the same.
Around here, Road diesel is $4.54 down the street and I have seen as high as $4.65.
I think that is all you can do, is add a fuel surcharge. I like what the City of Seattle has done around for the taxi companies and it may be good to do the same for your own company and let the vendors know.
The city has built into the contract with the taxi companies, that when gas prices hits a certain average they can add a surcharge fee, then if fuel hits another average, it increases again and again.
This will let your vendors know that for every, say like for every .50 or whatever the surcharge will be X amount.

On road diesel is $3.39-3.50 per gallon depending on the station. Which brings the question why there is an $.11 difference in fuel prices in the same city! Most of the fuel burned on my operation is off-road. What I have been considering is backing the fuel costs out of the O/O cost of the machine(s) for the job and adding fuel as "cost-plus". I don't know how this would fly - an thoughts?
I think just issuing a fuel surcharge would be easier to get across, although it may depend on the specific client. I think most people are used to seeing the occaisional surcharge these days.
