The city of Waterloo, IA and the Environmental Protection Agency are working to demolish and clean up the former Chamberlain complex, which closed 13 years ago.
In its heydey during the Vietnam War, the plant made bombs for the Defense Department and employed more than 800 workers.
Now it has fallen into disrepair and neighbors are asking that something be done about it.
The EPA is working with Chamberlain to investigate contamination at the site and issue a report on the risk to human health and the environment, and possible reuses for the property.
The city has allocated $400,000 for the demolition of the site, which includes 22 buildings. More money is needed for the project, which is estimated to cost about $1 million.
While information meetings have been held to discuss potential reuses for the property, Waterloo Mayor Tim Hurley says the future of the site will depend on the outcome of the EPA investigation.
