The skyline in Waterloo, IA is changing. Single story buildings at the old John Deere lot at Westfield Avenue are already down. Now work is starting on the large buildings.
"These were built before, in most cases, even World War II, so they've been here a longtime. They're very historic here in Waterloo so it's a sad and a happy day," said TechWorks Board Chairman Mark Kittrell.
Cedar Valley TechWorks plans to build a bio campus on the 40-acres.
"This is an area that is very focused on bio technology, bio energy and of course with ethanol and a lot of green activities and things going on environmentally. We're excited to position this area as an incubator," said Kittrell.
In the first few years, the campus should bring 30 to 50 new jobs to the area.
"And while that doesn't seem huge with respect to other economic development projects, when you think that's with respect to the bio economy, research and development and creating new jobs in a new industry, that's very significant," said Cary Darrah TechWorks General Manager.
This particular demolition process may not be as fast or dramatic, but that's because TechWorks wanted to keep with its "green" theme. Tearing the buildings down without dynamite allows more than 75 percent of the concrete and brick to be recycled, plus all the steel.
Those with TechWorks said this is a day years in the making and this destruction is a sign of the construction yet to come.
All demolition should be done by November. By next spring the site will be ready for tenants.
