The controlled demolition of the middle quad in Washington Apartments has been delayed another month.

Steve Lawrence, associate vice president for Facilities Management, said the demolition of buildings L, M, N and NN will take place during Central Michigan University's normal utility shutdown weekend, which is May 12-13, instead of late March or early April, as previously reported.

"When we looked into the details required for demolition, we learned that several other buildings would have their electrical supply disrupted to allow for the demolition to take place," Lawrence said. "We decided to postpone demolition ... to reduce the impact on students, faculty and staff."

The postponement will not affect construction of the new education building, Lawrence said, which is scheduled for this summer.

Lawrence said bidding for the demolition contract will begin in March, with the contract being awarded by the first week of April. He said abatement activities - the removal of asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint - will occur in April and early May.
