It's a go -- the implosion of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New Haven is scheduled for this October.
The United Illuminating Company has given the go ahead after months of delays due to concerns with protecting underground utilities from the implosion. Crews have been putting large earthen berms and tires in place to cushion the impact on the electric, cable and telephone lines under the streets. They have also been removing portions of the garage floors to lessen the weight of the Coliseum as it collapses during the implosion.
The October blast will bring down the steel framework of the garage.
