Galveston, Texas officials have stopped demolition of the Flagship Hotel after a collapse injured a worker critically at the longtime landmark on a pier on the island city's beachfront.
Most of the 45-year-old hotel already had been removed, but images of the scene Tuesday showed what appeared to be a remaining second level of the structure pancaked on the concrete pier that's over the Gulf of Mexico.
A city statement issued said a city building official has stopped work on the demolition until assessments and any needed corrections are completed. That's after the worker was taken to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston with what Fire Chief Jeff Smith called "very life-threatening" injuries.
City spokesman Alicia Cahill said all workers on the project were accounted for.
Crews had been demolishing the seven-story Flagship Hotel for several weeks. Hurricane Ike caused extensive damage to the hotel in September 2008.
Update: Sadly the demolition worker who was trapped for 20 minutes beneath a concrete slab that collapsed at the Flagship Hotel died of his injuries, officials said.
The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Tauelangi Angilau, 65, of Salt Lake City, Utah, He died Tuesday after becoming trapped by a 1,000 pound section of slab while the historic hotel at 2501 Seawall Blvd. was being demolished.
Angilau suffered a crushing injury. An autopsy was scheduled for later today, John Florence, a spokesman for the medical examiner, said.
