The local news here in Houston hasn't released who the contractor was. We had heard it was someone out of Utah. We bid that project three or four times. There were some crazy numbers the owners had for what they thought was there in scrap. My heart goes out to the family of the operator. It really sucks when this happens.

What a shame.
A very sad story.

My dad used to work for Champion paper, the operator of the mill, a long time ago, but I remember well.

Deep sympathy to the family of the operator. I am sorry for them.

A track hoe operator working at a demolition site in Northeast Harris County in Houston Texas, was killed on the job Friday night (1/16/2009).

It happened in the 18500 block of Beaumont Highway at the Old Champions Paper Mill.

The Sheldon Fire Department and HFD Heavy Rescue crews responded to the scene.

According to HFD, the track hoe operator was working when six stories of the building came crashing down on him.

He died at the scene.

HFD said nine other people sustained minor injuries, but none of them was transported to the hospital.
