The state Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will pay $1 million to help rid a former Nabisco bakery plant of asbestos, lead paint and other pollutants.

The Regional Industrial Development Corp., which owns the property, got the grant so it can push forward with a plan to turn the plant, with its football-field-length cracker ovens, into a mixed-use development called Bakery Square.

Walnut Street Capital Partners plans to build office and retail space and a 120-room hotel on the site in the city's east end.

Pittsburgh's Urban Redevelopment Authority is pushing for up to 14 (M) million dollars in state funding for the development.
