State regulators have fined two contractors more than $16,000 for their role in a February incident in which a brick wall collapsed and killed a construction worker in Durham, NC.

Thirty-five-year-old Derrick Pilgrim was crushed under a collapsed wall during a renovation of the old offices of Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company.

Monday the Department of Labor fined Barnhill Contracting for safety violations committed by its subcontractor, Big Dog Demolition.

The labor department says the companies have 15 days to appeal the citation.
