A six-week program training New Orleans residents, community development organizations, employers and contractors in environmental remediation is slated to begin on January 10, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1823 Washington Avenue, New Orleans, La.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor under the auspices of Dillard University's Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ).
The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) would like to identify, train, and mobilize minority workers and minority firms to participate in the clean-up and rebuilding process from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The DSCEJ at Dillard University, formerly of Xavier University, has conducted minority worker training programs for more than a decade. These programs provide academic and life skills enhancement, and technical training in construction, mold remediation, concrete technology, lead abatement, asbestos abatement, and hazardous waste removal. These workers have the skills needed for emergency response to environmental accidents and terrorism. Student incentives include stipends, bus tokens (if needed) and lunch. After receiving certification, participants will be assisted with job placement.
Part of the DSCEJ's mission is to obtain and sustain employment for those trained, preferably in the environmental remediation field, a field in which minorities are historically underrepresented. This effort is an outgrowth of the Center's efforts in community outreach and education for communities along the 85-mile stretch between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Those seeking additional information should call (504) 430-1333.
