I agree, it will be interesting to see if it even helps further "the cause"

yeah, the two big questions are will there be time for deconstruction. so often the GC or owner just wants the building down fast, and then does it pay economically to do deconstruction, given the labor involved, lead paint issues, etc.

It's not really a bad idea, but it's just getting the owners to want to pay for deconstruction. Right now some home owners don't want to pay for deconstruction.

Finally a good idea. The problem always seems to be that us demolition guys never have the time allowed to deconstrcut a building and salvage any materials because the GC's always have to reconstruct right away. Give us a little time and let's keep the landfilling down.

The city of Seattle may revise its building permit process to encourage old buildings to be deconstructed and salvaged instead of demolished and thrown away.

A member of the Department of Planning and Development, Sandra Mallory, says a revised permit would give contractors more time to salvage building materials for reuse.

Currently builders in Seattle are issued a demolition and new building permit at the same time. The proposed revision would allow builders to get a deconstruction permit within a few days without having to wait for the building permit to be issued.

The department plans to ask the mayor and city council by the end of the month to give a head start to deconstruction.
