The demolition of Memorial Stadium is one idea being proposed in an overhaul of the Seattle Center. The design ideas are being released today to open a year of environmental impact study and public comment, followed by the selection of a preferred alternative.
Some of the components include bulldozing some of the Northwest Rooms and refurbishing the Center House with glass walls and a glass roof. The various scenarios have been developed by the Century 21 committee, and the final selection is up to the City Council. The 74-acre Seattle Center occupies the site of the 1962 world's fair.
Prominent features include the Space Needle, Marion Oliver McCaw Opera House and the homes of the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Repertory Theatre and Intiman Theatre. City officials want to make the complex more visible and accessible with more open space, sophistication and excitement.
