Demolition Contractor S.B. Cox in Richmond, Va., plans to open a recycling center by late spring in eastern Henrico County just outside the Richmond city limits

Materials that can be recycled will be sent elsewhere for processing, said Barbee Cox, president of S.B. Cox.

"We're hoping to take 60 to 70 percent from what comes through this facility and divert that to recycling," he said.

Materials that cannot be recycled, including drywall and painted wood, will be taken to Cox's construction debris landfill in Chesterfield County.

Mike Barr, a spokesman for the company, noted that the facility will be the first recycling operation for the company, which already operates a C&D landfill in the area.

The recycling center will be totally enclosed. The company had purchased roughly 45,000 square feet facility and is adding another 12,000 square feet to the project.

The company will be performing all the C&D processing inside.
Materials expected to be handled at the plant will be concrete, metal, corrugated and plastics.

The company hopes to have all the permits in place and start operations by this coming April. The company already has local permits and licenses to operate the facility, and is waiting for permits from the state of Virginia before it goes ahead with the processing.

Henrico has approved a development plan for the recycling center. Approval by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is pending, Cox said.
