I never understood the blasting of them either! As far as the lead paint goes... also very funny. I did as gas holder where " they" were concerned about the lead paint... but, when it came to the gazillion chips that were on the ground afterwards it was o.k. to just consider that normal trash. Love it!
We were just awarded a Demo Contract on Bolling AFB outside of Washington DC and part of the package is removing the Radio tower there. The spec reads we have to wrap it in plastic because of the flaking lead paint. This makes all of us laugh because the tower looks like it has not been painted since it was new and there is more paint on the ground around it than on it. At the preconstruction meeting they ask us for the demo plan and I said that was easy. All we are going to do is take a sawzall out there and yell "timber" everyone said we sure wish it was that simple.
