PDG Enviromental has been awarded a $1.75 million deal to remove asbestos and lead paint from Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel, where Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968.

Kennedy was shot to death in the early morning of June 5, 1968 by Sirhan Sirhan as he made his way from the hotel's ballroom to a press conference after he won the California presidential primary.

The work on the historic hotel, located on Wilshire Boulevard, is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District's plan to demolish most of the site and build a $318-million campus.

The multi-story hotel is on 27 acres of land that also includes the famed Coconut Grove night club. Both have been closed since 1989, and the city has tried for years to sell the property before finally making a deal with the LAUSD earlier this year.
