I had occasion to examine the video of that shot a few years ago. What happened is that the reinforced top of the breech was too strong. When it hit the ground it resisted the collapse and sent stresses up through the stack which then shattered in the middle. If you get a chance to see the video you will see the SHTF when the top of the breech hits the ground.
Winchester Blasting did the implosion. We did the demo of the rest of the factory 8 years ago. The whole town wanted the stack saved, it's sort of a local landmark. That and a jewelry store with cheesy commercials. Stack was in rough shape when we were in there the first time. We got warned not get near it, or hit it.

It's funny that they left the stack standing in the middle of the apartment complex. Why didn't they just knock it down when the demo'ed the factory to build the apartments there in the first place?
i'm sure someone thought it'd be pretty. until it started dropping bricks like pigeon droppings!
I work for Omega Demolition, I'm a rolloff driver. The guys told me there had been repairs done in the middle of the stack, so it didn't fall as predicted. That stack had been dropping bricks onto cars for several years. Other than our rolloff box, the other damage was minor...a few windows and a couple garage doors, no damage to any vehicles.
