A piece of South Mississippi history was discovered Wednesday by an out of town demolition crew. And with the discovery, we also got the chance to meet a local historian of sorts.
BAMACO a disaster response company bought a significant amount of land off highway 90 to build a luxury condominium.
The ground-breaking is not until October. But they decided to do an early routine check of the property. What demolition crews stumbled upon is astonishing.
Steve Mitchell and several crew members found pieces of history dating back to 1908. In the old office of C.C. "Tex" Hamill, a Biloxi publisher in the mid 1900s.
"This morning I went inside and I opened up those dressers and I went, 'Wow, look at all this, all these antique pictures.' You can see them over here, and it just blew my mind," said Mitchell.
Jake Mladnich is a Biloxi property owner. He owned clubs like the Fiesta where music greats Sammy Davis Jr. and Elvis performed.
"This is a photograph that Tex made of Elvis Presley," said Mladnich.
Mladnich is excited these items were spared Katrina's wrath.
He's happy the Hamill's will be able to hold onto a piece of history.
"Its a very important discovery to be able to preserve all of this from the 'Down South' publications to all of Tex and Marge's photographs because everyone has lost theirs. Including me, I lost my home," said Mladnich.
"This is the blessing of the fleet in Biloxi. At the foot of Lameuse Street near the community peer. And that is father Mullins doing the blessing," said Mladnich while pointing to the picture.
Mladnich has lived on the coast for 80 years, he remembers it all.
"This is the original of the Magnolia hotel. Which was facing the beach at highway 90 in Biloxi. And this is D'iberville landing on the beach in Ocean Springs. These are the ships in the port of Pascagoula, "said Mladnich.
There may not be very many people on the coast Mladnich hasn't met. And the Hamill
