A couple curious dolphins forced a short delay in the underwater demolition of some old pilings at the John's Pass bridge this morning.
Workers were all set to blow up the old supports in the channel when crews noticed some dolphins swimming nearby. The countdown was halted while the marine mammals made their way to safer waters.
About 40 minutes later, the all-clear was given and, in what looked like a scene from a Hollywood action film, an underwater explosion sent a shower of sea water twenty feet into the air.
The Department of Transportation says the underwater explosions were necessary to break up the old pilings and clear the way for construction of the new northbound lanes of the John's Pass Bridge.
