[font=Verdana]State historians want assurances about bluff stability before they give final approval for demolition of the old Natchez Pecan Shelling Co. plant to make way for condos.[/font]
[font=Verdana]To answer the bluff stability question, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History's permit board is requiring a report from a qualified geologist or engineer.[/font]
[font=Verdana]Tom Waggener, who coordinates issues affecting state landmarks and National Register sites for the department, said the review was ordered because "the bluff has been sloughing into the river and millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent to stabilize it."[/font]
[font=Verdana]A $28 million U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' bluff stabilization project was completed in 2001. [/font]

[font=Verdana]The vacant Natchez Pecan Factory is listed as a historical landmark. Friday, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History board of trustees voted to give landmark status to the factory site, allowing the factory to be torn down. [/font][font=Verdana]Natchez[/font][font=Verdana] residents and historians opposed the move that could permit the building of a proposed condominium complex on the site. The city said the location was needed for future growth and is of little historical value. [/font]
