well maybe not......

Crews working to prepare the Midland Savings Building for its pending implosion are expected back on scene this morning after a fire sparked in the elevator shaft Monday afternoon causing thick smoke to pour from the 13-story building as flames blazed inside.

The fire started at around 2:15 p.m. Monday at the corner of Colorado Street and Wall Street when hot slag from a cutting torch hit debris inside the elevator shaft, said Fire Marshal David Hickman. The smoke and flames continued flaring up until after 4:30 p.m.

Crews from A&R Demolition were cutting reinforcement bars in the elevator shaft on the fifth floor with the torch, which is a standard procedure to weaken supporting structures so the building falls correctly during implosion, Hickman said.

After the flame sparked, smoke then poured from the top stories of the building as the fire traveled up the elevator shaft to the 12th floor where it stopped and moved outward. Flames also flared up on the fourth and tenth floors during the afternoon as crews shot water directly into the building from a raised truck ladder outside, officials said. Twelve units responded to the scene.

Because the building was being prepared for its demolition, there are holes in the floor and other dangerous conditions that wouldn’t have been visible through the smoke, forcing crews to attack the majority of the fire from outside the building, said Fire Marshal Jeff Meiner.

Demolition workers immediately cleared the building when they called emergency crews Monday. No one was injured during the incident, Meiner said.

The building was scheduled for implosion Nov. 8. and fire officials said it was too early to say for sure whether the incident would mean the date needs to be pushed back, though demolition crews say it should not.

Looks like it got moved again.

The Oct. 18 demolition date of the Midland Savings Building has been postponed

The date the demolition will be rescheduled for is still in the works, city spokesperson Tina Jauz said. Perry said officials are working to ensure each necessary entity will be available. Perry said they are now hoping for early November.
