The old Wachovia building on Front Street in Wilmington, NC was draped with a banner this week, a bright green signal that means that next month it will begin to disappear.
Demolition of the five-story former bank building will begin in mid- to late May, said Brian Agee, director of sales for the structure's replacement: The View on Water Street condominiums.
Two 25-by-50-foot banners are being hoisted by the Sign Co. of Wilmington - facing Front and Princess Streets.
Demolition will hardly be instantaneous. The process will take three months as it is deconstructed piece by piece by the D.H. Griffin construction company, Agee said. No implosion, he emphasized. The new building will stand 11 stories from the Water Street side and will take 14 to 15 months to build. Its construction will begin immediately after destruction, he said.
