Demolition of the Martin Luther King Bridge will now take place in the spring, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The spring demolition will allow fewer traffic restrictions on the Borman Expressway, which passes under the bridge.
The 6-year-old Martin Luther King Bridge closed on May 19, 2010, two months after inspectors discovered cracks in the its concrete beams.
INDOT is suing the bridge's builder, Superior Construction of Gary, alleging its construction was faulty. When the bridge is demolished, portions of the bridge will be saved as evidence in the case.
The $3.18 million work will be a "traditional, piece-by-piece demolition, completed by Dunnet Bay Construction Co., of Glendale Heights, Ill., the low bidder for the project.
