[SIZE=2]Things keep getting more and more interesting.

Sioux City's city council met yesterday afternoon.

The issue of KD Station and the company that was awarded it's demolition contract only took up a couple minutes at the end of the meeting. The contractor, Dore & Associates, a company out of Michigan, has come under scrutiny for it's dozens of OSHA violations and a botched implosion done in Omaha in 2002.

Council admitted that when it comes to KD Station their hands are tied. They are now contractually obligated to go with Dore, but the city plans to keep a close eye on the project.

"Both staff and our current contractor, Howard R. Green, are going to be on site making sure that everything is complied," said Council Member Aaron Rochester. "If it's not complied with, council will find out about it, we'll be looking for avenues to, of course, look for the next lowest bidder at that point."

Rochester says he regrets not knowing more about the company before awarding the bid, and hopes the city will take a sharper look at low bid contractors in the future. He also mentioned that Dore has done work for the city in the past, such as demolishing the Livestock Exchange building, and did an adequate job.

My understanding is that some of the grumbling involves the multiple agencies that are providing funds to pay for the KD job. I hope that they have secured all the money necessary to pay the winning contractor.

Our company just ran into some issues on a publicly funded project. We just completed the first half of a job for a local municipality in the Chicago-area. They owed us over $500,000 for the asbestos work we performed. After multiple phone calls with no answers, we were told that the city was waiting in a loan from a bank. We had to pull our guys out from starting demolition and wait until we received the check to finish the rest of the work. Thankfully, all has worked out and our guys are now wrecking.

The KD Station was awarded to Dore and Associates by a vote of 4 to 1. It will be interesting to see the final outcome because Dore did not attend prebid but one of there subcontractors did. The city said Titan did not have the required state certification when it submitted the bid. I believe that Dore has worked with the city before so it may stay with them since the city council voted to award them the contract.

I heard that the KD Station Demolition was going to the overall low bidder which was Dore & Associates. I guess they decided that all the bidders were not non-responsive; whatever that meant. You can check the city council agenda for Monday at New Page 1

I'm seeing the same here in Maine. American Tissue company is slated for demolition and there were 58 contractors signed in on the prebid attendance sheet. Its really amazing the turnout coming to these jobs . doug

On this one, don't be to sure, the estimated on the demo and abatement is at around 5 million and I am sure it will come in under that.

This is starting to happen everywhere. As the work becomes scarce, more and more bidders are popping up everywhere. Its going to be very hard to make any money out there for a while.

It will take some time for the field to thin out.
