Demolition crews are beginning to tear out the interior of the Riverfront YMCA in Des Moines, Iowa.
Crews are scheduled to begin demolishing the shorter parts of the building in the next two weeks.
After that, the eight-story residential tower will be imploded, likely in September.
The demolition work marks an end to months of debate over how much of the 58-year-old downtown YMCA could be saved. Architecture-buffs and amateur historians prized the building for its exemplary mid-century modern architecture and its civil rights era murals.
As soon as we hear of a date and time we will let you know.
D.W. Zinser is the demolition contractor.
