THis is an extension of the publics idea that demolition is just wacking away with a hammer. Demo requires that you roll with the unexpected. I have yet to wreck or strip out a structure that didn't have a non-documented as-built that caused a hiccup, my own home included!
Leave the demo to the pros please.

Too bad what they let happen to those neighborhoods. Looks like they were once pretty good houses. When is HFH going to start wrecking them? Will they do it themselves or contract the work out to professionals?

But they should not get safety exemptions. Injuries can be just as bad when you are working for a non-profit, and personal injury recoveries in court can be just as big when the defendant is a non-profit. Justice is (or supposed to be) blind.

Those non-profits always get special exemptions ;)

Why? Why? Why?!?!?!?!:bang:

Leave the demolition of unsafe, structurally compromised, hazardous buildings to the trained professionals. This is a potential example of good intentions having disastrous effects. Hopefully the HFH folks will look around the Saginaw area and redirect the volunteers to assist the community in other, less life threatening ways.

Yes, they should leave the demoliton to the professionals. HFH is making a big mistake, and they won't know it until a big mistake does happen, and they have to pay big time. Hopefully there won't be any loss of life before they figure that out.

It was fine with Mr. Dore, until his crews showed up and found that two large HVAC units were removed, and for sale at Restore. Never did hear how it was resolved, but the HVAC units are still sitting at the restore.

I hope the good people at Habitat know the rules concerning refrigerant that is contained in the HVAC system. The units (line sets at the very least) would need to be recovered if they were split systems. If the units were package style & "Restore" decides to scrap them eventually they will need to have the refrigerant recovered & documented.

Sounds like a bad idea. Just a bunch of volunteers taking sledgehammers to an old place? I'm sure there are hazards at a building site as well, but HFH has a few decades of experience on the building side of the equation. Hopefully they are getting advice from a competent source. Otherwise, it will take an "oops" before they revisit their mission statement.

It always makes me nervous when something like this happens, not because the are new competitors, but who is going to train them and whose gonna pay when something goes wrong.
