A Geelong, AUS demolition company has come under fire after 70 tons of asbestos was found at a vacant Point Henry site, which has been converted into a dumping ground.

Geelong Trades Hall regional organizer Brendan Murphy claimed up to 100 people had been exposed to the toxic dust and the clean-up bill was estimated at $400,000.

Occupational health and environment consultants, Hygienics, audited the Point Henry Rd site on February 26 and found cement sheeting throughout the property was littered with asbestos amounting to the weight of about 70 cars.

"These were in discreet stacks and generally covered loosely wrapped with black plastic," its report said.

Geelong Demolition owner Patrick McCormick leases the site but said he had been locked out of the premises for about one year.

He declined to answer any further questions and said the matter was with his lawyers.

EPA Victoria environmental services director Bruce Dawson said he would inspect the site today to determine what further action was necessary.
Mr Murphy said Geelong Demolition should be suspended from operating.

"I'm very concerned about it for the fact it's a cancer-causing problem. Something desperately needs to be done for the owner of this property."

"He has rented it out in good faith thinking that authorities would oversee the use and he has been stuck with an asset he can't do anything with because it's now a dump site.

"It needs to be cleaned up immediately because there is a work site opposite and you don't want any worker subjected to any of that toxic (material)."

Mr Murphy said tighter controls were needed to ensure demolisher comply with their permits and the community is not faced with a health hazard.
Geelong Demolition founder John Tsorotes said he was pushed out of the company's partnership about a year ago.
