The future of the Tropicana Hotel is once again in limbo. A bidding war has erupted for ownership of Aztar, the Arizona company that owns the Tropicana. For a while it was thought the hotel might be shutting down this month. But when a buyout deal was announced in February, everyone was told that demolition was at least two years away.
Aztar's intention was to implode the two towers of the Tropicana and rebuild the entire resort from scratch. A tentative shutdown date had been set for this month.
But all that changed earlier this year when Aztar agreed to be purchased by Pinnacle Entertainment, a gaming company with hotels in Reno and Atlantic City. Along with the announcement came a statement that demolition would be delayed two years while new plans were developed.
But the deal isn't done, and another bidder has entered the picture. Colony Capital has upped the ante. Colony already owns the Las Vegas Hilton and is now seeking to make a name for itself on the Strip.
Workers at the Tropicana protested several years ago when their future seemed in doubt. And now the uncertainty continues. If Colony winds up owning the hotel, no one seems to know if demolition of the resort will come sooner or later. One thing seems certain, however: someone will buy Aztar. The company's board of directors is reportedly meeting this weekend to decide whether it will be deal or no deal.
