A home being demolished was leveled Thursday, firefighters say, after it was set on fire and left unattended.
"It was a house that was being demolished and the landowner - we do not even know who it is at this time - left (the home) burning and it got out of control," Mill Township Volunteer Assistant Fire Chief Bob Jackson said.
Volunteer firefighters from Mill and Center townships and Gas City were called at 2:41 p.m. Thursday to 4740 E. 600S. The structure that was being torn down was in flames, he said.
"They were living in the garage next to the (home being demolished), and it had begun to catch fire when we arrived, but we were able to catch it in time," Jackson said.
Firefighters had the fire under control in about 25 minutes, but they did not leave the scene until shortly after 5 p.m.
"It took quite a bit of time because we tried to locate the landowner, and there was some stuff there that we didn't want to leave unguarded, so we left that with the sheriff's department," Jackson said.
No one was at the property when firefighters arrived, Jackson said, and no firefighters were injured. He estimated at least $10,000 combined damage was done to the garage and contents inside.
