A smoky fire broke out at the soon-to-be demolished Boardwalk hotel-casino Tuesday afternoon, shutting down traffic along the Las Vegas Strip, authorities said.

The fire started shortly after 3:30 p.m. as hotel crews were doing demolition work, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said.

More than 50 firefighters responded, and Leinbach said the blaze was contained quickly.

Traffic was halted in both directions along a two-block section of the Strip.

Some 50 workers were dismantling part of the structure when debris ignited, said Yvette Monet, spokeswoman for MGM Mirage Inc., which owns the property. The fire was extinguished by about 4:30 p.m., she said.

Fire department and company officials said there were no injuries.

The Boardwalk closed in January to make way for MGM Mirage Inc.'s planned $7 billion Project CityCenter, to be finished in late 2009. The Boardwalk is set to be imploded in the next several months, she said.
