A construction company plans to finish demolishing the old Fuller Warren Bridge now that a four-year-long federal investigation into debris dumping into the St. Johns River has been closed.
Atlanta-based Balfour Beatty Construction Inc. will complete the demolition of the Fuller Warren Bridge in downtown Jacksonville in accordance with the permits recently issued by the government agencies, said Hank Coxe, local counsel for Balfour.
The investigation began in early 2002 and Coxe said that government officials told him June 12 that the investigation had ended. While a grand jury was convened, no indictments were handed down.
Balfour won the state bid to build the new Fuller Warren and destroy the old one in the mid-1990s. The old Fuller Warren Bridge was replaced in 2001.
"We're glad it's over and we're moving on," Coxe said.
Balfour is a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty plc, an $8 billion engineering and construction company based in London, England
