Last year was horrible - lot of equipment (almost half of our fleet) were not in use. The economy was terrible. the competition was huge, low number of project to compete. Most public projects (schools, hospitals etc)
This year, prices are still low, machine park is reduced. all equipment is producing. Economy is better (but not as in the good years with earnings on some projects over 20%). Nr of projects have increased particular, mainly in the private sector.
Guys - I thought last year was bad - but its nothing to this year. If we didnt have the one large project and few smaller ones going on - I'm sure we would pack it in.
What makes it worse is what the public and private jobs are going for. Companies (GE, Dow, Wyeth, TECO, etc) from coast to coast are getting bargin basement abatement and demolition done, so I guess its good for them.
I've never seen so many people at walk-thrus, many of them that I've never seen before, so they are smaller excavation companies getting into demolition. They have lower costs because they are not carrying demolition insurance, etc.
Love to hear from others around the US if the economy is bouncing back anywhere, because it the Northeast its bad.
