Workers digging up the basement of the building that formerly housed the Cultivator Shoals Club found bones buried under the basement floor Thursday morning, halting work until the medical examiner could determine the bones' origin and age, police said.

Police treated the area at 94 Front St. in New Bedford, MA as a possible crime scene while the bones were being removed.

Police said first indications are that the bones are very old and possibly from an animal.

The club building is being renovated for use as a bar and microbrewery.
The basement floor was being dug up to lower it by about 2 feet to increase the room's height to meet city building code requirements for the microbrewery.
Lt. Jeffrey Silva, police spokesman, said the medical examiner is expected to complete the review quickly.
