Demolition begins early Monday afternoon on Span B of the Sanibel Causeway, the first of three bridges that will become artificial reefs.
Demolition will take about three weeks, said Kris Cella, a transportation consultant working with Lee County, FL on the project.
"They're going to start saw-cutting and taking the pieces to the reef site," she said. "It's pretty uneventful."
They have a lot of material to move.
The bridge is about a third of a mile long, with 62,472 square feet of material, weighing more than 1.1 million pounds.
The new Span B opened in early April, with Span A -- the one nearest the mainland
