Manhattan: Church Demolition Delayed

By COLIN MOYNIHAN
Published: August 25, 2006
Saying she planned to issue a ruling after Labor Day, a State Supreme Court justice in Manhattan yesterday allowed a temporary restraining order to remain in place preventing the immediate demolition of a 150-year-old Roman Catholic Church in the East Village. The Archdiocese of New York in 2001 closed the church, St. Brigid

When demo like this happens in New York, it usually results in more power for the preservationist camp. They may lose the battle, but come out winning the war. Witness the demo of Penn Station which gave rise to some of the most powerful historic preservation laws and powerful landmarks commission in the country.

Here, could mean laws curbing the church's discretionary powers over its real estate.

Let's watch this story and see what happens.

Sad story. At 150 years old, the archdiosese, one of the biggest landowners in New York, should treat the old church better. It sounds like they are not even attempting to salvage anything, with the referrence to a smashed stained glass windown. Probably just want to get the building on the ground as fast as possible, with all the adverse publicity going down.

And it sounds like a public relations disaster for the church too. With all these people like Councilwoman Rosie Mendez, who was a parishioner of St. Brigid

Figures I just got an update:

The city Department of Buildings has temporarily halted demolition of a beloved East Village church as parishioners rally outside to save St. Brigid's.

The DOB says the work stoppage is due to a technicality. Officials say there were not enough dumpsters to handle the debris. The delay is welcome to protesters who have been hoping for a miracle all morning.
