The demolition of the old Helena plant warehouse in Mission, TX has begun.
The 50-year-old building was used to house and mix chemicals. It's a symbol of bad memories to many residents. They've attributed their illnesses to the plant. But doctors have never been able to prove a connection.
An Environmental Protection Agency spokesperson tells us the agency hired a structural engineer to survey the site and plan a tear-down strategy.
Demolition crews started on the side of the building they believe has the least amount of contamination. There appeared to be dust in the air. But we're told it's actually mist from water they're spraying, which is used to minimize dust.
It should take about two months to knock down the entire warehouse.
Crews will have another concern once the building's gone. There's still the issue of contaminated soil beneath the warehouse.
