The difference between Sellafield and Chapelcross projects is the presence of active, nuclear facilities surrounding the Sellafield towers. The four at Sellafield have been drilled, and partly covered for well over six months. The NII, that's the UK equivalent to our NRC, has yet to give BNG (British Nuclear Group) permission to bring explosives on an active nuclear facility. It appears the Brits are the ones who invented Red Tape!
The iconic cooling towers of the former Chapelcross nuclear power plant will be demolished on Sunday, May 20.
British Nuclear Group (BNG) chiefs confirmed today that the four giant chimneys, which have stood for nearly 50 years, will be brought down in just 10 seconds by controlled explosions.
Residents in nearby Annan heard about the proposals at an exhibition and public meeting yesterday.
An exclusion zone surrounding the atomic plant will be put in place during the explosion, which will take place at 9am.
