Demolition started Friday on the Twin Oaks apartment buildings at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
Crews used a wrecking ball to take down the brick veneer.
The university plans to replace the buildings with a new student housing development and a parking garage.
Workers could not implode the buildings because a sewer line runs underneath them.
"Once the brick veneer is off the outside of the building, then we'll start chewing away the columns of the building and start hitting them with the wrecking ball and we'll take multiple floors out at a time," said Craig Burgess of Kaw Valley Demolition.
It is expected the buildings will be demolished in about four or five months.
All of the materials will be recycled.
