Demolition crews begin work Monday to remove a ship-loading crane at the Alabama State Docks that was toppled when a ship struck it.
Crews will use barges to move the twisted pieces.
An electrician who was working on the crane was crushed and killed in the March 2 accident. The ship, the ZIM Mexico III, whose bow struck the crane, is due to sail back into the Port of Mobile in the coming weeks to deliver cargo, Port Authority CEO Jimmy Lyons said.
"We don't have any particular concern there," Lyons said. "I think anybody might be reluctant to sail it without a tug."
Lyons said he hopes to have a replacement crane operational before an expected business increase this summer.
Replacing the crane will cost between $3 million and $4 million, including the delivery cost, he said.
