The area known as the Meriden Hub in Meriden, Conn. was sent crashing to the ground Wednesday.

Cinder block by cinder block the Hub was demolished to make way for new development.

The 14-acre site is an abandoned office complex that was built in the 1970s to attract business.

Meriden's mayor said the area floods easily because it was built over the Hanover River.

"Some large companies would use this as an incubator for their business, but they would not invest the necessary dollars to stay because of flooding concerns," Mayor Mark Benigni said.

After the Hub is completely demolished, the new site will combine flood retention ponds, economic development and a new green. Another major attraction to the site is the expansion of the rail system proposed by Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

"If you've been on our highways, you know the rail is the way to go. Because we're located in the center of the state, this is an ideal location for the transportation hub," Benigni said.

The city received a $2 million state grant for the demolition, but Daniels reported the cost for the future expenses remains unknown.

Benigni said that at this point, the project has not cost taxpayers much, and that the city is applying for more state grants
