Demolition on much of the Delphi Flint East complex could begin as early as this week.
The power plant, water treatment facilities and other buildings on the sprawling site are being prepped for destruction by a demolition company, said Delphi spokesman Brad Jackson.
The demolition should last about a year, leaving just two plants by the time work is done.
The plants that remain are used to manufacture vehicle instrument clusters and a part for gasoline tanks.
The number of Delphi workers at Flint East has dropped from about 7,000 in 1996 to about 1,100 today.
The Sloan Museum in Flint has already made arrangements to save some historical items in the demolition process, including signs and paintings.
There are also plans to save a series of decorative tiles that were manufactured at the site using the same machines used for spark plugs.
