D.H. Griffin Wrecking Co. had progressed to the point that the interior of the 56-year-old performance venue on the campus of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex was exposed.
The auditorium saw its final performance in September, and it had been slated to be demolished soon after that last round of applause. But after an initial round of bids, city council members were concerned about whether those bids met the standards of the city's Minority and Women's Business Enterprise Program.
A second round of bids was rejected, and then preparations for demolition were halted in October after it was discovered that city employees and contractors might have been exposed to asbestos.
D.H. Griffin was awarded the contract in late spring, and the demolition is expected to take about eight weeks to complete.
